Paving has become a distinctive feature of architectural landscaping in its own right, with a wider than ever range of paving materials allowing for more adventurous design. Metal edging systems are pushing the boundaries of creative hard landscaping even further.
Metal edging systems can be easily formed, either on-site or during manufacture, to create sweeping curves and intricate shapes.
Measuring only a few millimetres thick, metal edging systems become almost invisible when flush fitted with paving. While aluminium edging will settle down to a dull silver over time, weathering steel acquires a charming, earthy patina that blends effortlessly with natural soft landscaping products such as soil and bark chippings.
Of course, sometimes edging is just shouting to be seen and if paving is raised above or sunk into its surroundings, the edging can become a visible component of the design. Once again, weathering steel can be used to good effect here, or a powder-coated finish can be used to either coordinate with other design elements or create a splash of contrasting colour.
Compared with concrete kerbing, metal edging is more resistant to damage caused by machinery, impact and frost. It also offers a low-maintenance lifespan that can last for decades.
Aluminium is recommended for coastal areas where it is particularly resistant to salt corrosion. The natural patina on weathering steel created by a fine layer of oxidisation acts as a natural barrier to corrosion in most normal environments.
Powder coating steel also offers increased corrosion resistance and greater durability than conventional paints.
Metal edging systems are extremely lightweight and can be easily carried and laid by one person. As the sections of edging are fixed in place with metal spikes driven into the ground, neither a concrete base nor haunching is required. With no concrete mixing, laying or setting times to allow for, hard and soft landscaping materials can be installed immediately.
Aluminium Landscape Edging
This is the first choice for paving edges as its natural mill finish gives it durability, excellent resistance to corrosion and a long, low-maintenance lifespan. If required, it can also be powder coated to any RAL colour.
Manufactured in six thicknesses ranging from 5mm to 8.5mm and ten heights ranging from 15mm to 150mm, AluExcel gives plenty of scope for adventurous paving designs and can easily be formed to shape on-site.
Aluminium Landscape Edging
Another good choice for paving if the look of powder-coated or weathering steel is to be combined with extra strength. Fort is best suited as an edge for paving as it is compatible with hot asphalt, tarmac, rubber coating, resin-bound and paving.
Its rolled top edge ensures Fort has no sharp corners, making it a safe option for use in recreational areas.
Although it has a total folded thickness of 7mm, Fort is easily formed to follow curves and contours and is manufactured in two heights (50mm and 75mm).
Available as standard in galvanised or weathering steel (CorTen, or our more cost-effective alternative), Fort can also be powder coated to any RAL colour.
Steel Landscape Edging
This is our contract steel edging product and a popular choice for paving as it offers a range of bespoke options. For a start, it is available in several finishes – galvanised or weathering steel (CorTen, or our more cost-effective alternative), or powder coated to any RAL colour.
Urban can also be manufactured to bespoke heights and thicknesses and pre-formed during manufacture to create bespoke shapes for great visual effect or to accommodate landscaping and other features.
